Why Sleep Is the New Competitive Advantage in Travel and Leisure

The most discerning hotel guests in the world aren’t just looking for a comfortable room. They’re looking for a great night’s sleep. Senior Sales Manager Josh Chandler shares what he’s hearing from hoteliers in the travel and leisure space, and why the properties that get the sleep experience right are the ones pulling ahead.

Josh Chandler, Senior Sales Manager at Tempur Sealy Hospitality Not long ago, the mattress was a line item. A box to check during a renovation cycle, evaluated on budget and brand standard compliance and not much else. That conversation has changed. For hoteliers in the travel and leisure space, particularly at luxury, boutique, and resort properties, sleep has moved from a room requirement to a genuine competitive differentiator. Senior Sales Manager Josh Chandler, who covers Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Western Pennsylvania, and New York for Tempur Sealy Hospitality, is seeing that shift play out in real time. “Sleep has definitely moved from just being an amenity to being part of the overall guest experience,” Josh says. “In the luxury and boutique segment, operators are looking at it as a competitive advantage rather than just a room requirement.”

The Review Economy Changed Everything

Ask Josh what’s driving the shift, and he points to something every hotelier watches closely: online reviews. “The majority of guest complaints we see across any of these types of reviews come down to one of two things,” he explains. “The service they received during their stay, and the mattress. Do they wake up refreshed and feeling relaxed, or do they wake up with a stiff back? Comfort and wellness are talked about a lot more now than they were even three, four, or five years ago.” For luxury and resort properties, where guests arrive with high expectations and share their experiences loudly, that dynamic matters enormously. A guest who doesn’t sleep well is a guest who leaves a bad review, and in a world where search rankings are built on star ratings, a bad review has real business consequences. “Nowadays, when someone Googles a hotel, the ones that pop up are the high-rated ones,” Josh notes. “These operators are finally realizing that a mattress is such an integral part of the room and overall guest satisfaction.”

The Expectation Gap Is Real

Luxury and leisure travelers are a specific audience. They travel frequently, they’re discerning, and more often than not, they’re sleeping on a premium mattress at home. The question is whether the hotel bed holds up to that standard. Josh thinks it can, but only when properties are making the right investment. “Chances are the guest we’re talking about is already sleeping on a Stearns & Foster or Sealy mattress at home,” he says. “We do extensive testing to make sure our mattresses last at least 10 years or longer. I’m very confident they’ll deliver the same level of comfort and quality that guests already expect at home.” The flip side is equally clear. The challenge many properties face today isn’t just aging inventory. It’s mattresses that are still technically within their expected lifespan but have gradually lost the support and comfort they once delivered. A mattress doesn’t need to be old to fall short of guest expectations. It just needs to have stopped performing. “Those mattresses are going to be sagging,” Josh says. “Guests aren’t going to be sleeping well, and their overall satisfaction scores will certainly represent that.”

What It Looks Like When a Property Gets It Right

Josh points to a recent example that illustrates just how much is at stake. A resort property had been fielding complaints about their mattresses for years. The mattresses from a previous vendor had only been in the hotel six to eight years but were already generating significant guest dissatisfaction. “The GM asked a lot of questions about how we test our mattresses, how they feel, how they hold up,” Josh recalls. “We sent them a model room order so they could test them out, and then they ran a whole campaign around the new sleep experience.” The results were concrete. After switching to a Tempur Sealy Hospitality product and getting guests sleeping on the new mattresses, the property’s guest satisfaction scores for comfort specifically tied to the mattress increased by 10 to 12 percent in just a few months. “That’s just from changing out the mattresses,” Josh says. “It’s all part of the durability and quality that Sealy has. You’re not going to see our mattresses indenting and sagging after 10 years of use.”

Investing in the Sleep Experience Is Only Half the Battle

Once a property makes that investment, the question becomes how to make sure guests actually know about it. And according to Josh, that’s where a lot of hotels leave opportunity on the table. “The ones that do a really good job put sleep-focused messaging on their website, booking confirmations, room descriptions, and guest communications,” he says. “It’s almost like the hotel embeds it as part of their culture.” Sealy’s position as America’s number one mattress brand helps make that story easier to tell. “Sealy is a brand that guests recognize and trust,” Josh explains. “At Tempur Sealy Hospitality, we love to emphasize the value of aligning the hotel sleep experience to the brand that consumers already know.”

What the Next Three to Five Years Look Like

Josh doesn’t mince words about where the market is heading. “Every single leisure and resort property needs to be 100% on board with the sleep experience, wellness, and relaxation,” he says. “If hotels aren’t on this train, they’re going to be left really far behind. Everyone else is doing it.” For properties that are ready to make that move, Tempur Sealy Hospitality offers something that goes beyond the product itself. A team of dedicated mattress specialists walks properties through the entire process, from selecting the right mattress for their specific guest profile to logistics support, project management, and everything after installation. “Our job is to take mattresses off their plate,” Josh says. “To give the hotel one less thing to worry about.”

The Bottom Line

The hotels winning on guest experience in the travel and leisure space aren’t leaving sleep to chance. They’re making intentional decisions about what goes in the room and how they tell that story to guests. For those properties, the mattress isn’t an afterthought. It’s the foundation. The question is who you trust to get it right. At Tempur Sealy Hospitality, we’ve built our entire model around earning that trust. That’s what being the Best By Every Measure means to us, and it’s what we bring to every partnership.
